There is a reason that Auckland is known as the “City of Sails”, the bustling metropolis is a mecca for those who love to sail. The city is also renowned for the comprehensive learning-to-sail courses that are on offer, with Yachting New Zealand offering local and national courses which are organised by affiliated clubs under the Yachting New Zealand umbrella. The organisation prides itself on using advanced training methods to provide excellent programmes that are well resourced.
If you are keen to give sailing a go then get hold of your closest yacht club to find out what courses they offer. Yachting New Zealand has an extensive list of clubs on its database, and runs the popular “Sailing… Have a Go” programme for intermediate age school children. Joining a yacht club and having lessons with them is a great way to get started, from there you can start competing or cruising on your own. The great thing about sailing in Auckland is that it is a sport for people of all abilities, with the teaching programmes structure to suit beginners to more advanced sailors.
Yachting New Zealand also runs well structured courses for those are keen to teach sailing themselves. Once you have completed a Learn to Sail Coach Dinghy course and you are younger than 18 you can take part in an Assistant Learn to Sail Coach. You will need to be helping out with a Learn to Sail programme and will be working with a qualified sailing coach. Completing this course allows you to take part in a Learn to Sail Dinghy Coach course, where you will be taught and assessed to achieve a Level 2 qualification. This course is run by Yachting New Zealand over two and a half days by accredited trainers where you will be marked on your sailing and teaching ability, and skill in handling a powerboat.
For those interested in becoming a keelboat coach Yachting New Zealand runs excellent programmes where you can become competent as a multihull, trailer yacht, and keelboat coach. Once again this is an extensive two and a half day course where you will be graded to Level 1, 2 or 3 and are then able to teach yourself.
Completing a Learn to Sail or Coaching course is a fantastic way to take advantage of the great sailing conditions Auckland has to offer.
